Dear Overly Active Sebaceous Glands: WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS OILY SKIN?

Dear Overly Active Sebaceous Glands,

Thank you for lubricating our skin; for locking in that moisture to keep us hydrated, aiding us in thermoregulation, and protecting us against the bacteria of the day. We appreciate and recognize the bounty of your work and we don’t want you to get the wrong idea. It’s not that we aren’t grateful. But we ARE looking for some balance!

Is it too much to ask that my skin feel a little bit less…slick? I’m talking less shine, smaller pores, and a T-zone that doesn’t resemble a slip-and-slide from my 9th birthday. Skin that doesn’t serve as a breeding ground for comedones and pimples, but rather a clean foundation, refreshed and ready for the life I want?

THE WHAT:

Welcome to RaVina Labs at-home facial experience, full of all the spa zen without having to leave your living room.

We can’t wait to join you on your journey to healthier skin and help you learn to love all the beautiful quirks and benefits about your oily skin along the way. During our journey together, I would like to share some of my aesthetic knowledge with you and go over a couple of things about your skin type and your Balancing Treatment for oily skin

THE WHO:

Licensed Aesthetician and Registered Nurse Jennifer Matthews -- co-founder and CEO of RaVina Labs, is bringing her 28+ years experience directly to you, teaching you a little bit about your skin and acting as a one-woman skincare shaman creating a gentle, rewarding and beautiful experience for you as you begin your journey to skincare enlightenment. I talk about skincare as a journey mainly because it is. As much as the beauty industry would like to sell us on the idea of a “perfect product” that will “fix your face”, we all know the real secret is the process. With over two decades of experience working with skincare of all types, I would like to share some of my aesthetic knowledge that I’ve learned along the way and go over a couple things about your skin type and your Balancing treatment for Oily Skin.

THE YOU:

You have identified with oily skin. Your skin feels slick? It appears shiny and sometimes you describe it as feeling ‘thickened’? You might even be experiencing enlarged pores, comedones, and/or pustules. Take a deep breath. You might have spent a lot of your time asking yourself: “Why is this happening to me? I wash my face, I wear SPF, I take care of my skin!”  First of all, this is not your fault! When our oil glands or sebaceous glands are over-producing sebum (think hyperactive), our skin becomes oily. But in order to really get to the bottom of oily skin, we have to understand sebum. What is sebum? Sebum is an oily, waxy substance that is  produced by your sebaceous glands and is made up of a cool but complex team full of triglycerides, wax esters, squalene and fatty acids. Sebum is originally there to help you, not hurt you. It’s meant to lubricate your skin (and your hair!) and maintain as well as strengthen your natural skin barrier. Sebum will also mix with the sweat on your skin thus creating the acid mantle. The acid mantle is an incredible thin protective layer that sits on top of your skin that has the ability to protect your body from microbial invasion.

Here’s the downside: Even though your oil glands are working overtime for the hydration and protection of our skin, balance is key.  If you're over-producing oil, all you’re seeing and feeling throughout your day is a buildup of streaking and greasiness and then who cares about all the good, protective stuff your oil glands do for you.

Clients always ask me the same question:  “Can’t you just make the oil go away!?” If the skincare genie came up to me one day and granted me even just one wish, I’d ask for balanced skin for all. Indeed, I wish I could bid adieu once and for all to the endless greasiness, the slickness and the comedones-- but, alas. We would need to speak to the genetics and hormones genie for that trick. Your oil production is so specifically tied to your individual genetics and your hormonal makeup.

But all hope is not lost. We can effectively balance out your sebaceous activity by introducing a few key ingredients in your easy all-in-one 5 step at home facial kit.

Our team of skincare experts carefully crafted your Balancing Treatment for oily skin, making sure to focus on ingredients that will not only ensure the right level of oil production, but also introduce you to a curated facial routine that you give yourself every 14 days.

These oil balancing ingredients include:

Jojoba: liquid wax ester which is similar to the wax ester found in the skin’s sebum. It acts as a  moisturizer, aids in balancing the oil on our skin, and  functions as a deep cleansing agent that clears blocked pores and soothes irritated skin with its anti-inflammatory properties.

Bamboo charcoal: excellent absorbency capacity: absorbs dirt, dust, toxins and harmful substances from the skin, resulting in a healthier skin

Retinol: improves texture of skin by accelerating the process of skin cell turnover which can reduce clogged pores

By including your bi-monthly facials into your routine, your skin should feel more balanced and

to further help control your oil production in between those facials, we’ve included additional step 4, balancing complexion oil.

Balancing complexion oil: for you to use when needed under your daily moisturizer.

We know that everybody’s skin is different and that the journey to skin you feel good in is a windy one. We are always here for you and we’d love to chat with you about your specific needs. Send us an email!

Thank you for taking time for yourself,
Jennifer + the RaVina Labs Family
